The New Year’s holiday in China is the one time of the year when everyone attempts to take a break from it all to go home and see family and friends. Businesses and factories close and the country is on the move. The holiday is human migration on a grand scale. chinaSMACK’s article estimates that around 100,000 people in the Pearl River Delta region use motorcycles to commute to and from their homelands during the holiday season. Country-wide, that means millions of Chinese are out there, risking it all on two wheels, plying the vast expanses of China in a desperate attempt to get home to see loved-ones for the new year. Train tickets have been sold out for weeks and flights are too expensive for most migrant workers. With few other options, Chinese laborers choose the ever-resilient motorcycle to get them where they need to go during the holiday season.
